WIND EFFECT ON LIGHT AVAILABILITY UNDER CANOPY OF ACER SACCHARINUM L. AND A. PSEUDOPLATANUS L.

Different changes in light transmission under canopies of two maple species depending on biomechanical properties of leaves and branches are shown. Higher light transmission through Acer saccharinum crown under wind action (7 m/s) is due to long flexible branches and flexible petioles. Less intensive canopy light in A. pseudoplatanus stand under the same wind velocity and crown density can be explained by rigidity of leaves and branches. Brighter light conditions under silver maple allow understory to grow in the silver maple stand.

BACILLARIOPHYTA OF THE RIGHT-BANK FOREST-STEPPE OF UKRAINE. II. NORTH-WEST DNIEPER AND NORTH-EAST DHIEPER HIGHLAND PROVINCES
Primary inventory of Bacillariophyta within two physographic provinces of the Right-Bank Forest-Steppe of Ukraine was performed. The general list consists of 41 genera and 131 species (137 varieties including nomenclature type varieties (NTV)). Cymbella proxima Reimer is new a new record for the algoflora of Ukraine, 12 species are new for the Forest-Steppe zone and 34 species (35 NTV) — for the Right-Bank Forest-Steepe. In total, 105 diatom species (108 NTV) of 38 genera were recorded in the North-West Dnieper Highland Province, and 107 species (111 VNT) of 41 genera — in  the North-East  Dnieper Highland Province. The following six rare for Ukraine species were found: Fragilaria bidens Heib., Synedrella subconstricta (Grunow) F.E. Round et Maidana, Luticola goeppertiana (W. Sm.) D.G. Mann, L. nivalis (Ehrenb.) D.G. Mann, Naviculas chroeterii F. Meister, Nitzschia liebetruthii Rabenh. At present, similarity between  Bacillariophyta species composition of the studied areas is rather low (Kj = 0,66). The stagnant waters in both provinces have similar Bacillariophyta species composition, while  the flowing waters are characterized by different complexes of widespread species. A significant number of brakish-water species and indicators of a-mesosaprobous and polysaprobous zones is recorded.

LICHENS OF THE M.M. GRYSHKO NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN (KYIV, UKRAINE)

Results of a floristic survey of lichens occurring in M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden are presented. 51 lichen species and one lichenicolous fungus, Athelia arachnoidea, are listed. Rinodina septentrionalisis reported as a new record for Ukraine. Despite high diversity of phorophytes in the Botanical Garden, its lichen species diversity is low. Most of the lichen species in the Botanical Garden are tolerant to urbanization and frequent in the built-up area of Kyiv city. Only a few species sensitive to urbanization were recorded. The lichen species diversity patterns on natural and introduced phorophytes are very similar, which is probably be caused by environmental pollution in Kyiv.

TERRESTRIAL ALGAE OF ZMIINYJ ISLAND (BLACK SEA, UKRAINE): GENERAL CHARACTERISTIC AND PECULIARITIES OF SPECIES COMPOSITION

In 2008–2009 we studied biological crusts, moss patches and soil collected from Zmiinyj Island (Black Sea, Ukraine). In these samples we identified in total 92 eukaryotic and prokaryotic algae. The majority of those were green algae (Chlorophyta 55; Streptophyta 5 species), but also twelve cyanoprokaryotes, eight xanthophytes, eight diatoms, and one eustigmatophyte were found. Mіschococcus sphaerocephalus Vischer and Trichosarcina polymorpha K.H. Nichols et Bold were recorded for the first in Ukraine. In addition, some rare taxa, Chlorokybus atmophyticus Geitler, Myrmecia israeliensis (Chantan. et Bold) Friedl et al., Chondrocystis dermochroa (Nдg.) Komбrek et Anagnostidis, were observed. The three different biotops were not only different in their species composition, but also in their species abundance. In soil samples the highest species diversity was registered, in contrast to biological crusts on cliffs where only 25 species were found. In moss patches several species were observed which normally prefer aquatic environments.

ANATOMICAL  AND MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERS OF SIUM LATIFOLIUM L. LEAVES UNDER DIFFERENT GROWTH CONDITIONS
A comparative anatomical study was carried out in order to define the effect of water regime on leaves of the air-water and land plants of Sium latifolium L. It was established that investigated plants adapt to unfavorable environmental conditions by means of anatomical changes. The natural water deficit resulted in reducing the size of leaves and mesophyll cells. Surface ultrastructure of the epidermis and stomata density vary between plants growing in water and under conditions of moderate water deficit on the river bank.

ROLE OF MICROHABITATS IN POPULATION RECRUITMENT OF RARE PLANT SPECIES IN THE UKRAINIAN CARPATHIANS
Effective population recruitment of many rare plant species in the Ukrainian Carpathians requires suitable microhabitats, i.e. small sites where ecological and coenotic conditions are favourable for germination and establishment of seedlings. These are mostly mossy patches for riparian hygrophytes, small crevices or cavities for chasmophytes, gaps in continuous tussock cover for mesic grassland species. Such gaps may be caused by anthropogenic or natural factors. Population recruitment of some rare species is most successful on disturbed sites situated on the pastures, along the paths or on the edges of semi-abandoned roads. Many of these taxa (e.g., Minuartia verna (L.) Hiern. subsp. oxypetala (Wol.) Halliday, Saxifraga corymbosa Boiss., Thlaspi dacicum Heuffel, Th. kovatsii Heuffel) belong to short-lived small-sized plants and demonstrate traits of r-strategy. Conservation of their populations depends on the maintenance of traditional forms of land-use.

COMPOSITION AND DYNAMICS OF SILENE JAILENSIS (CARYOPHYLLACEAE) POPULATION ON THE SOUTH-EASTERN SLOPE OF NIKITSKAYA JAILA OF THE MOUNTAINOUS CRIMEA
The dynamics of plants group in the population composition of Silene jailensis (Caryophyllaceae) on the south-eastern slope of Nikitskaya jaila (1350—1400 m above sea level) was studied in 2005—2010. This group, formed by in different age states, amounts 65 % to general number of components in population. The death of all pregenerative, mostly young and old generative plants were fixed during the given period. The numbers of plants of middle generative age were preserved without changing. Probably, these processes are the result of essential reduction of precipitations below the rate in July and August. The moisture accumulated during condensation from air, fulfills the needs of plants with well-developed root system. But the plants with poor developed root system need the regular precipitations in summer for their development.

EPIGENETIC ADAPTION IN MOSSES AND PHENOMEN OF CELL MEMORY
Moss clones from individual variably differentiated cells both in haplo- and diplophase are rather easy to obtain. Under conditions of gradually increased stressor content in the substrate, selective action of mercury on survival of microregenerants of the clone from individual gametophyte cell of Tortula modica was found. High survival percentage of microregenerants (about one third) can result from selection of directionally induced, «memorized» the stress action epigenotypes, rather than from selection of rare random genotypes. High frequency of epigenetic adaptation is most probably caused by enrichment of DNA, in particular of regulatory regions of many genes, with a substrate of methylation Ї cytosine. Dosing of the stressor enabled to fix the boundary between physiological and epigenetic adaptation. Some increase of peroxidase activity was noted during physiological adaptation of microregenerats to low concentrations of the mercury while its selective action was not yet expressed. In resistant epigenotypes the activity of peroxidase increased significantly and electophoretic spectrum of the enzyme widened, only one of molecular form being more clearly expressed in vegetative progenies of epigenotypes on the stressor-free medium. Physiological and epigenetic adaptation apparently differ only in the overvall level of DNA methylation and stability of methylated state in regulatory regions of certain genes. Since the delimitation of the two types of adaptation occurs in different mosses under various concentrations of the stressor, its dosing in comparative microclonal analysis of moss turfs under stress conditions and turfs in unstressed localities is supposed not only to reveal epigenetic adaptation in nature but also to predict, to a certain extent, the species composition of mosses populating devastated territories.

VARIABILITY OF THE ALIEN SPECIES ANTOXANTHUM ARISTATUM BOISS. (POACEAE) IN THE WIELKOPOLSKA LOWLAND (WESTERN POLAND)

Morphological variability of Anthoxanthum aristatum Boiss. populations was examined. Multivariate statistical analysis of 24 morphological characters of the panicle obtained from six sample populations (138 specimens) collected in different habitats was carried out. The analysis of variance ANOVA indicated significant morphological variations among samples. The principal component analysis (PCA) revealed three groups of samples. These groups are not completely separated from each other and sometimes overlap. Canonical discriminate analysis (CDA) proved useful for variety discrimination of characters such as: panicle length and length of internodes, spikelets on the second and the middle branching from the panicle top and upper glume. Weak correlations were detected between morphological differentiation of A. aristatum populations and the habitat type they occupied.

REPRODUCTIVE STRATEGY OF BRYOPHYTES ON THE DEVASTATED TERRITORIES OF SULPHUR PRODUCTION (LVIV REGION)

The ranges of sexual types and life strategies of bryophytes on the rock dump of Jaziv sulphur deposit of Novoyavoriv mining chemical enterprise "Sirka" have been determined. It was established that on initial stages of bryophyte succession acrocarpous dioecious colonist-species prevail due to alternation of vegetative and generative reproduction, decrease of ontogeny duration and age of first reproduction. The sex dimorphism, different rate of plant maturation, of productivity and different capacity for reproduction are the main factors causing deviations in sex ratio and promoting cross-fertilization in dominant dioecious species, thus supporting the high level of genetic variability and stability of moss colonists under conditions of devastated territories.

SYNATHROPIZATION OF XEROTHERMIC GRASSLANDS IN THE DZIALY GRABOWIECKIE (LUBLIN UPLAND, SE POLAND)

The Dzialy Grabowieckie region is located in the Lublin Upland (SE Poland). The occurrence of xerothermic grasslands is typical for this region. Twenty-two sites with xerothermic grasslands were investigated in 2005-2009. In the course of the study, we registered both synathropic vascular plant species, which were permanently connected with grasslands, and those aliens that present a potential threat for native species or ecosystems. The available published data was used to compare the past and present occurrence of synathropic species in xerothermic grasslands. The number of synathropic species decreased together with the cessation of use. Some archeophytes (e.g. Onobrychis viciifolia, Pastinaca sativa, Cichorium intybus) are at present permanently connected with xerothermic grasslands; however, kenophytes, such as Robinia pseudoacacia, Solidago gigantea and S. canadensis, pose a potential threat for xerothermic plant communities.

BRYOPHYTES OF THE EXPERIMENTAL AND TEACHING GARDEN OF THE FACULTY OF BIOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION, UNIVERSITY OF LODZ (POLAND)

The aim of the study was to determine the species composition, taxonomic and ecological diversity of bryophytes of the examined site and to determine their prevalence in the area. During the research, there were showed the presence of 42 species of bryophytes (41 mosses and one liverworts) belonging to 15 families. The shown species represent 29 % of all the species identified in the city of Lodz and surrounding area. In this group there were 7 species not reported so far in this area. The research showed five types of habitats covered by bryophytes, they are: epigeic, epilithic, epiphytic, epixylic, and aquatic. Most species were found in the examined area, in epigeic habitats — 34 species, least were found in aquatic habitat — only one species. A large number of identified species confirms that urban parks are characterized by a large diversity of species of bryophytes. The large number of species unlisted in this area so far confirms the validity of the green areas as the significant mainstays of briological diversity of a relatively floristically poor urban areas.

RESERVES OF LITTER ON FLOODED MEADOWS OF THE LEFT-BANK FOREST-STEPPE OF UKRAINE

It was found that reserves of plant litter in the flooded meadows of the region vary within 24,8—297,3 g/m2. Weather conditions, particularly temperature and rainfall, affect its accumulation. The amount of litter is conditionally divided into three groups. Majority of the floodplain sites belong to the second group of grass stands (51,0 — 89,9 g/m2). The dry matter content in litter gives some idea of the yield on certain areas. It is shown that lower economic pressure, including various degrees of protection, leads to increase in the litter reserves.

THE ABORIGINAL FRACTION OF THE URBAN FLORA OF CHERNIHIV

The species composition of aboriginal fraction of the Chernihiv urban flora is established. It contains 765 species (73 % of the total number of the urban flora) belonging to 347 (74 %) genera and 97 (84 %) families. An analysis of its structure is given. It is demonstrated that the aboriginal fraction and the urban flora of Chernihiv retain zonal properties. The apophytes are represented by 240 species which is 23 % of total number of the urban flora, 31 % of the aboriginal fraction, and 46 % of the synanthropic fraction. The structure of the apophytes corresponds with the aboriginal fraction and urban flora of Chernihiv. Retainment of zonal properties of the urban flora in Chernihiv in future depends on apophytization since the apophytes are most resistant to anthropogenic influence.

POLYMORPHISM OF NUCLEUS-NUCLEOLUS PARAMETERS OF PICEA ABIES (L.) KARST. (PINACEAE) SEED PROGENY IN THE NATURAL POPULATIONS AND INTRODUCTION PLANTATION

Cytogenetic quantitative polymorphism was studied in the Picea abies (L.) Karst. seedlings. Seeds were collected from trees in two natural populations of Ukrainian Polesie and introduction plantation in Donbass and grown in the laboratory. It was established that interphase nuclei in offsprings of trees from the plantation and the population in areas with high radioactivity level are smaller than in population with low anthropogenic influence. The number of nucleoli and their area, and nucleus-nucleolus ratio was the lowest in the tree progeny from the introduction plantation. Environmental conditions (including radioactive pollution) affect the seed progeny of P. abies which is reflected in its cytogenetic characteristics.

EFFECT OF SHORT-TERM TEMPERATURE STRESSES ON LEVEL OF ABSCISIC ACID IN PLANTS WITH DIFFERENT TYPES OF ECOLOGICAL STRATEGY

We analyzed the changes in level of free and conjugated forms of abscisic acid (ABA) in 7-days seedlings of plants with different types of ecological strategy after short-term high and low temperature stresses. It was revealed that in control conditions level of conjugated form of ABA in all analyzed species was higher compared with free form of phytohormon. Explerents A. caudatus and B. campestris  characterized by highest level of free and conjugated forms of ABA in control conditions. Level of phytohormon in patient R. patientia x R. tianshanicus was lower compared with violent F. pratensis and explerents A. caudatus and B. campestris. The obtained data allow to conclude that changes in level of conjugated and free forms of ABA of investigated plants after short-term temperature stresses correlate with the type of their ecological strategy. ABA contents may be used as possible biomarker of plants thermotolerance and their ecological strategy type.
